the role of teachers in orienting students for adopting means of
environmental protection should be looked for.’ The sub themes for the
seminar focussed on the issues of ‘Water crisis in Punjab: A horrendous
scene’, ‘Climate change: causes and remedies’ and ‘Need to integrate climate
change education into educational programme and school curricula’. Sharing
her views in a key note address, Dr. Vandana Mehra, Associate Professor,
Department of Education, Panjab University said, “ The problem of
environmental degradation is a global issue, and the role of teachers is
very much imperative in this kind of a situation. The major threats to human
survival comes from interrelated problems like that of increasing
population, ozone depletion, deforestation, release of harmful gases in the
atmosphere, increasing global warming, air pollution, and rapid depletion of
natural resources. Human activities like over grazing, deforestation, use of
insecticides have led to major problems of land pollution leading to soil
degradation. The role of teacher educators is of prime importance where they
need to develop environmental sensitivity, development of environmental
ethics, awareness about environment, positive attitude towards environment
among the prospective teachers.’ Conveying the thoughts to integrate
environmental education as a compulsory subject in the school curriculum,
Dr. (Mrs) Sarita Saini, Principal, stated, “Through
education one can be made to appreciate the value of the environment and
help in its protection, and as such is the key to environmental
sustainability. It has been proven to be one of the best environmental
management tools.
From experience it’s been found that the most effective methods are those
which get the students directly involved such as Song, Creative writing,
poem, painting, quiz competitions, Field outings, Discussions, seminars and
workshops on environment awareness. Class discussion and feedback online
(whole class is involved), celebrating environment week etc. School has to
demonstrate innovation in environmental activities and adopt environmental
